New Green School after Earthquake - Delta Sunshine Junior High School Groundbreaking Ceremony
Delta Group has helped the recovery from the Ya'an earthquake in Sichuan, China, by donating 10 million RMB to build the Delta Sunshine Junior High School in Longmen Township, Lushan County in 2013. On October 15th of this year, the groundbreaking ceremony took place at the Longmen Township construction site. Ceremony participants included State Department Counselor and Chairman of the China Renewable Energy Society Dinghuan Shi, Director of the National Housing and Living Environment Engineering Technology Research Center Ji-shou Zhong, General Manager of Delta Greentech, Donald Yu, Deputy Director of the Economic Division of the Taiwan Affairs Office of Sichuan Province Lei Chen, Deputy Director of Overseas Compatriot Taiwan Affairs Office in Ya'an City Yong Shi, Vice Mayor of the People's Government of Lushan County Dong Wang, and other important guests.
Utilizing its past experience in natural disaster region reconstruction, Delta aims to build a low carbon emission, 2-star green building with a seismic rating of 7.5 degrees. The school will become the second green campus that Delta has sponsored in Sichuan, China.
According to Mr. Ji-shou Zhong, the designer of the two green schools in Sichuan, China Architecture Design & Research Group, has emphasized the energy consumption conditions of Sichuan, including climate, culture, and campus operations. The designer also considered natural environmental conditions and different building functions to create the best space arrangement and green energy utilities, such as solar power.
With well thought-out design, the campus has excellent ventilation, heat and sunshine prevention, and is humidity-proof during the summer. In winter, the buildings stay warm and protect against strong winds. These “passive design strategies” decrease energy consumption while enhancing comfort for the teachers and students. The strategies include natural ventilation, elevated ceilings, raised foundation, skylight windows, light regulation, and more. The daytime average temperature is estimated to decrease by 2.1°C and the relative humidity to decrease for 23.5% compared to classrooms that do not adopt these strategies. In addition, the skylight windows enhance desk surface illumination of 92lux for classrooms on the highest floor, which is equal to a 30% reduction for daily lighting on average.
Mr. Yu of Delta Greentech pointed out that Delta has high regard for corporate social responsibility (CSR) and continues to help reconstruct green schools in earthquake devastated regions in China and Taiwan. In 2008, Delta donated 10 million RMB to build the first green campus in Sichuan Province, and 5 million RMB to rebuild damaged school buildings in the 2014 Ludian earthquake in Yunnan, China.
Delta's corporate mission is “To provide innovative, clean and efficient energy solutions for a better tomorrow.” To fulfill this mission, Delta integrates its energy management technology and energy efficient solutions and products for buildings and has also contributed to society by building a green campus at the earthquake recovery site. Delta has sponsored the “Delta Cup Solar Building Design Competition” for five seasons since 2006. The Delta Sunshine Primary School in Yangjia Town in Mianyang, an affected area of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, was based on an award-winning plan in 2009.
For now, Delta has built 11 certified green buildings around the globe, which include seven Delta factories and four donated schools, and saved over 12 million kWh in 2013.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Mr. Dinghuan Shi pointed out that the Delta Sunshine Primary School has received excellent feedback from the students and teachers. He hopes that the students will have a better learning environment at the Delta Sunshine Junior High School.
The Vice Mayor Mr. Dong Wang also expressed his gratitude for Delta's support. He promised that the local government will bring strong responsibility and construction quality to the school. Some of Delta's employees also volunteered to offer courses on saving energy for students in the area, in the hope of passing on the concept of preserving our green Earth.
The first group of volunteers arrived at the Delta Sunshine Primary School on October 16th. They presented the benefits of green buildings with software and hardware using an interactive teaching style to bring energy saving concepts and approaches into the students' families and daily lives.
