Delta E-Bike Powertrain Solution Empowers Customers to Build Brand Differentiation with Flexibility and Performance

Market research forecasts that the global E-Bike market, which has reached USD 30.56 billion in 2022, is expected to grow to USD 54.48 billion by 2027 with a robust CAGR of 10.25%. First purposed for mountain biking, E-Bikes are now expanding to long-distance touring, commercial logistics, and commuting, making E-Bikes a critical part of green mobility in cities, said Josh Chi, director of Delta’s E-bike Solution Division.

In the past, most E-Bikes have adopted hub motors, which allow lower costs yet limited choices. As consumers look for better riding experiences, mid-drive motors are gaining popularity, which give balanced weight distribution and a riding experience closer to normal bicycles. Chi pointed out that around 47% of global manufacturers have adopted mid-drive motors, a figure expected to surpass that of hub motors in the near future.

How Does Delta Help Customers Tackle the Challenge of E-Bike Differentiation?

Chi observed that global E-Bike manufacturers face two major challenges today. First, the limited variety of power systems constrains the possibility of developing product uniqueness, making it difficult for brands to stand out. Second, many powertrain solutions are closed systems and therefore restrict the options of batteries, displays, and design flexibility.

Leveraging over 30 years of expertise in motor control and electric two-wheelers, Delta has developed an E-Bike Powertrain Solution that integrates a mid-drive motor, battery system, and HMI display. The 4-in-1 mid-drive motor system integrates the controller, motor, gearbox, and sensors in a patented coaxial transmission design. The compact system is 20% smaller than comparable products yet delivers up to 100 Nm of torque. The innovative system not only leads in performance but has also won the 2024 TAIPEI CYCLE d&i Award and the 2025 iF Design Award in Germany.

Customer-Oriented Open Platform: Delta’s “Standard + Customization” Strategy

With the solid foundation of hardware innovation, Delta has built an open platform for customization with the support of a robust supply chain ecosystem. For example, collaborating with battery and HMI manufacturers, Delta offers a 600Wh 36V 16Ah tubular battery and high-brightness LCD displays. With Taiwan’s top bicycle component makers, Delta also co-develops compatible chainrings, cranksets, and freewheels. With this open platform, Delta enables manufacturers to freely mix and match components for differentiated designs.

To meet brand-specific needs, Delta implements a “Standard Product + Customization” strategy, which combines standardized core system and customizable interface and applications. This approach maintains engineering and manufacturing consistency in the powertrain system while enabling unique brand expressions. With this strategy, manufacturers “create brand identity without the need of high investment and long lead time for the development of molds and other elements,” said Chi.

Currently, Delta offers two engineering-validated core system solutions with an open architecture. Manufacturers can specify batteries or HMIs from preferred brands—or even integrate their own in-house components seamlessly. Chi emphasized that this highly configurable semi-custom model is ideal for mid-sized manufacturers seeking a balance between resource investment and brand differentiation. It brings significant competitive advantages to the entire E-Bike industry.

Empowering E-Bike Innovation with Drive Systems to Support Urban Sustainability

“Although Taiwan has the world’s most comprehensive bicycle supply chain, the rise of E-Bikes exposes a critical gap in power system technology,” Chi pointed out. Delta’s strengths also benefit from Taiwan’s industry environment and national policies. Invited by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Delta has leveraged its motor control expertise, local R&D capabilities and real-time technical support to empower international brands that also set up R&D centers in Taiwan.

Chi concluded that this strategic collaboration not only addresses critical technical gaps in the E-Bike value chain but also lays the foundation for the electrification of Taiwan’s bicycle industry, reinforcing Taiwan’s leadership in the global bicycle supply chain.

Delta’s E-Bike Powertrain Solution offers the following advantages and benefits:

  • Integrated Solution with Compact Size and High-Performance Output

Delta’s solution consists of the motor system, battery system, and HMI display to enhance overall performance with a high level of integration. The mid-drive motor system combines the controller, motor, gearbox, and sensors in a patented coaxial transmission structure, reducing size by 20% comparing to similar-grade products, while delivering torque up to 100 Nm. The system, ideal for e-Trekking, e-MTB, and e-Cargo bikes, has also received awards worldwide for its innovative design.

  • Balanced Standardization and Customization for Quality and Brand Identity

Delta ensures exceptional quality in its core power systems through consistency in engineering and manufacturing. Meanwhile, it offers flexible customization in applications and interfaces. For example, manufacturers can specify the preferred battery systems or HMIs for integration, or even incorporate their own components. This approach is especially beneficial for mid-sized manufacturers aiming to balance resource investment with brand identity.

  • Building a Collaborative Ecosystem for an Open Platform

Delta continues to expand its ecosystem to unlock further possibilities in market differentiation with flexibility. For instance, by working with battery and HMI manufacturers, Delta provides a 600Wh 36V 16Ah tubular battery and a high-brightness LCD display. Delta also partners with Taiwan’s leading bicycle component makers to co-develop compatible chainrings, cranksets, and freewheels for specific needs and designs.

Delta’s E-Bike Powertrain Solution integrates a mid-drive motor, battery, and HMI to deliver outstanding performance in a compact design. To enable product differentiation, Delta proposes a standardized core system combined with customizable applications and interfaces to achieve both quality and differentiation. Building on this foundation, Delta collaborates with ecosystem partners to develop an open and flexible platform. Their collective efforts strengthen the international competitiveness and leadership position of Taiwan’s electric bicycle industry.
