New Application: Delta Industrial Automation Solutions for the Oil Well Industry

Delta Industrial Automation has entered a new field! Through continuous effort, development and innovation, Delta Industrial Automation is providing a power management unit for precise pump speed and torque control with smart interface configuration to a major international oil company in Argentina through the support of two Argentina partners, EQUITECNICA and ACCIS.

Background

With increasing global demand for oil, large oil and gas companies continue to invest, which includes updating and reactivating wells to improve production capacity and extraction efficiency, reduce mechanical stress in the system, and optimize continuous service.

Energy is a significant portion of operating expenses for oil and gas companies. Cold environments with very low temperatures present an even greater challenge, since the density of oil makes extraction particularly difficult.

The pumping units for oil exploration, whether new or existing, are controlled by a system that provides solutions to maximize efficiency and productivity of the pump and prevent outages and associated energy costs.

Three major objectives are pursued by oil exploration companies:
- Energy efficiency in the extraction process
- Increased productivity
- Reduction of mechanical and electrical stress of installation.
It is crucial to control the pump speed depending on productivity, whether the pump is working 100% of the time, or for just short periods due to non-constant flow or low recovery time.

The Delta Solution

The oil company in Argentina searched for the best solutions and decided to adopt Delta's solution with the suggestion and support of EQUITECNICA and ACCIS.

Power Control Solution

In this integrated system, the power control solution for the oil pump includes the Delta C2000 series variable frequency drive to help create an uninterrupted flow of oil, reducing downtime and energy costs. Essentially, the C2000 provides the necessary frequency for the primary control program (PCP) motor to adjust the pump speed to the highest RPM (revolutions per minute) at any time. This optimizes production and minimizes mechanical stress.

The C2000 also automatically adjusts the RPM to avoid overload problems in the rod due to clogging of the pump, obstructed lines, or under-loads due to belt rupture. It also manages the back spin effect at boot time to protect the pump, the rod, and maximize production. All these features result in an exceptional increase in efficiency and well performance.

Command Panel Board

Delta uses an HMI with 7” display, 65,000 colors and touch screen as a control interface on the front panel. It's able to connect a Pen Drive with a USB socket to store performance data and alarms.

The device is installed on the main door of the system and attaches to the whole system. Behind the main door, the graphic display of the C2000 series is implemented on the second main door of the device cabinet.



The C2000 is located in the cabinet with Delta's power supply to provide energy to commands, lighting, transformers, thermostats and humidity resistance. As the cabinet may be placed outdoors in cold climates, the cabinet is fully waterproof with a smart forced air convection duct coordinated with the C2000 temperature. This allows circulation of air through a sink and thus keeps the driver electronics isolated from components inside the cabinet.

● Dependable management (reading field measurements are identical to those that are read from a graphical interface)

● Operation of manual or automatic mode, care of extractor rod is prioritized (with torque control)

● USB port for data extraction using Pen Drive

● Combined lists (template engine preloaded with market data)

● Auto reset when deficient in energy
● Two analog inputs for well sensors (4 to 20 mA)

● Emergency stop according to IEC / EN 61508
● DC brake injection option to avoid backspin
● Automatic and manual mode selectable by the operator from a screen
● Detection of high and low torque
● Detection of high and low speed
● Passwords for several user levels (up to ten levels)
● RS 232/485 Comm Port, to be surveyed by system data acquisition system (SCADA)
● Standard motor and power protections

Opportunity for All Applications
