Event Review: Delta Showcases Smart Automation Solutions for the Packaging Industry at SWOP 2017

Delta joined SWOP 2017, one of the world's largest and most focused packaging exhibitions, from November 7th to 10th in Shanghai, China, and presented a comprehensive portfolio of industrial automation products and smart packaging solutions. Delta, with an innovative vision and rich industrial automation experience, successfully fulfilled customers' needs to enhance packaging efficiency with solutions that integrate advanced automation products, including the Compact Modular Mid-range PLC AS300 Series, the High Performance Servo System ASDA-A3 Series and the Standard Compact Drive MS300 Series.

“In response to market demand, Delta has collaborated with industrial experts to develop smart, diversified, integrated and multifunctional packaging systems, and establish smart manufacturing and management platforms for customers.” said Mr. Nai-Quan Wang, product director of Delta Green Tech China. “To cater to market changes, Delta is focusing on smart manufacturing, and aiming to offer more high speed, high accuracy and highly efficient smart packaging solutions for customers.”

As technology improves, the packaging industry demands better packaging machines with higher quality and greater productivity. Delta, for many years, devoted its efforts to learning the industrial know-how for integrating its self-developed automation products to create smarter, more efficient packaging solutions. At the show Delta presented:

Food Packaging and Sorting Solution with Robot Solution: In recent years, the market has seen an increasing demand for food processing, including hot pot ingredients. Traditionally, the sorting and packaging of hot pot ingredients has required a lot of manpower to complete the process. In light of this, Delta offers an integrated robot solution and machine vision system to achieve automated hot pot ingredient packaging and sorting. Delta's Machine Vision System is used to detect the position of hot pot ingredients on the conveyor, and to send the information to the ASDA-MS Series robot controller with an integrated servo drive. The ASDA-MS Series then orders the SCARA robot to pick up the ingredients, place them in the designated boxes, and return for the next picking. This solution can effectively reduce human error and increase overall efficiency.

Food Packaging Inspection Solution with Machine Vision System DMV Series
The barcodes and the printing on food packaging used to be inspected by operators, which often resulted in poor product quality due to human error. To solve this problem, Delta offers the Machine Vision System DMV2000 Series which supports up to 4 cameras at the same time for multi-purpose inspections (e.g. edge, color). It can be mounted behind the printers to identify whether the dates, barcodes and fonts are clearly printed on the products or packaging. The DMV2000 Series also supports a “shape matching” function to reduce a false inspection rate due to the different ways of placing products on the conveyor belt. With this solution, customers can greatly minimize the cost of manpower and effectively improve yield rates.

Soft Pack Tissue Packaging Solution with Multi-axis Motion Controller DVP-MC Series
Traditional tissue packaging machines adopt a mechanical cam for processing, which causes a lot of noise during the operation and is not easy to maintain. There also exist issues with current tissue packaging machines, such as single-form packaging, complex operating procedures and low compatibility. Delta's Multi-axis Motion Controller DVP-MC Series is designed for high speed and high precision motion control. The built-in CANopen communication and E-CAM function enable up to 16 or 24 axes control, greatly improving equipment efficiency. When matched with Delta's motor drives and servo drives, the DVP-MC Series can perfectly realize high speed motion control and precisely complete tissue feeding, moving, film cutting, wrapping, folding and more. This solution successfully achieves “fast, stable, accurate” operation for the tissue packaging processes.

Delta also showcased a wide range of automation products applicable to the packaging industry that drew the attention of visitors. The featured products included:

Compact Modular Mid-range PLC AS300 Series
Delta's AS300 Series is a high-performance and multifunctional controller. It features Delta's 32-bit System-on-a-Chip (SoC) design, and greatly enhances execution speed at 40k steps/ms. The AS300 Series also came with ISPSoft programming software that allows users to complete system planning with little effort based on the needs of the production line. In addition, ISPSoft supports real-time system monitoring, recording and diagnosing that enables customers to effectively manage the operating status.

High Performance Servo System ASDA-A3 Series
Delta's ASDA-A3 Series features a 3.1 kHz higher responsive bandwidth and a 24-bit absolute type encoder for fast and accurate positioning, fulfilling the application needs of flying shear, rotating platform and E-CAM functions that require point positioning, high-speed synchronized motion and tracking. In addition, the ASDA-A3 Series is equipped with low frequency vibration suppression and auto-tuning functions to ensure machine optimization and operation stability.

Standard Compact Drive MS300 Series
Delta's MS300 Series is among the smallest drives in Delta's drive product line. It supports both induction and permanent magnet motors, providing a superior drive performance for a wide range of machines and units. In addition, its compact design enables customers to save cost and space for installation, increasing application flexibility and industrial competitiveness.
