Event Review: Delta Smart CNC Machine Solutions with IIoT Technology and Smart Manufacturing Solutions at TMTS 2016

Focusing on smart manufacturing trends, Delta Industrial Automation (IA) participated in this year's Taiwan International Machine tool Show (TMTS 2016) for the first time from November 23th-27th in Taichung, Taiwan, and impressed the CNC machine tools market.

With the theme “Smart Manufacturing and Automation for a Changing World”, Delta cooperated with well-known Taiwanese CNC machine manufacturers and presented a robust line of its latest industrial automation products, smart machine solutions and smart manufacturing solutions for the machine tools industry and smart green factories. Delta's booth received excellent reviews and feedback during the five-day exhibition. It featured a new Open CNC solution, cloud platform and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solution, advanced smart machine solutions, smart factory solutions and demos of a CNC lathe machine and five-axis machining center integrated with Delta's newly announced articulated robot DRV Series and DIAOEE Overall Equipment Effectiveness platform. The booth successfully demonstrated the high speed, high precision, high flexibility and intelligence of Delta's smart machine solutions for smart and green manufacturing.

With many years of experience and technologies in the industrial automation field, Delta showcased its strengths and built on a strong reputation in the machine tools industry and smart manufacturing. Popular demos, solutions and products included:

Integrated CNC Lathe Solution with Robot Machine Tending System adopts Delta's CNC Lathe Solution to control the CNC vertical lathe for performing processing tasks. It employs Delta's newly announced Articulated Robot DRV Series to conduct parts loading and unloading into and out of the CNC lathe machine for machining without manual operation. The robot can automatically pick up and exchange parts from the other side, and the machine no longer waits for an operator to be present to load/unload the parts. This solution integrates robots that can perform applications which are hazardous to humans, occupying less space and reducing labor costs to improve the productivity, efficiency and safety for machine owners. It provides an advanced, flexible and smart machine solution for current and future automated production.

Smart CNC Machine Solution with IIoT Technology features cooperation with Fair Friend Group (FFG), one of the biggest and best known CNC manufacturers in Taiwan. This demo connected the CNC machines displayed at the Delta and FFG booths, which applied Delta's new Equipment Data Acquisition Platform DIALink to collect current operating information such as working coordinates, current and voltage, and acquire processing data such as total processing amount, processing speed, machine cutting hours, and operating hours, in real-time. It also integrates Delta's new Overall Equipment Effectiveness Platform DIAOEE and IIoT technology, to offer visualization and remote management interfaces for CNC machine monitoring and control. Visitors can see Delta's CNC machine demo information at FFG's booth, and vice versa at Delta's booth, marking Delta's pioneering approach of system integration into smart machines and the future of smart manufacturing.

The Overall Equipment Effectiveness Platform DIAOEE can monitor all industrial robots, CNC machines and any manufacturing equipment, achieving equipment data transparency and efficient equipment management. Current machine statuses includes operating time, planned loading time, availability/uptime, productivity and performance, and pass yield rate, which can all be remotely acquired, graphically visualized and displayed by the DIAOEE for analysis and management. The DIAOEE helps optimize the overall efficiency of equipment and complete real-time data analysis and acquisition control for identifying operating progresses. Management can easily monitor and control the overall equipment effectiveness and processing efficiency at different production sites to effectively save manpower and time. In addition, the DIAOEE can also help machine owners adjust machine parameters for maintenance and repair, enhance equipment effectiveness and reliability, and extend equipment life, achieving unmanned operation and highly efficient management.

• The new Open CNC Solution provides an open structure for hardware and software and allows user-friendly customization for CNC machine makers. It adopts Delta's new Open CNC Controller NC30EM Series, which provides programming PC tools and an editing platform for customers to self-define their functions on CNC machines, offering customized and easy integration with Delta's Motion Control Panel PAC MP1 Series or a third party software via IPC. The NC30EM Series realizes digital communication and noise suppression when matched with Delta's high speed servo motion and spindle systems, to reduce additional hardware for customers focusing on software upgrade and integration for better operation performance for CNC machines. This solution provides highly flexible configuration and high performance solutions for CNC machine makers to save development costs and accelerate their time to market.

This year was the first time Delta attended and advertised at TMTS. The chairman of Delta Group, Mr. Yancey Hai, accompanied by the general manager of Delta's Industrial Motion System Business Unit (IMSBU), Dr. David Tsai. attended the exhibition, which shows the importance of this year's TMTS to Delta. They met important clients and partners at Delta's booths, and conducted discussions on market and industry development trends for the future with the president of FFG's Industrial 4.0 Division, Dr. David Ma, and the general manager of EQUIPTOP HITECH CORP., Mr. Ken-Chang Chang. They expressed Delta's determination to raise the competitiveness of Taiwan's machine tools industry. In addition, Dr. Tsai was invited to give a speech at the FFG machine tools 4.0 partnership forum, where he shared a success story of FFG and Delta cooperating on an intelligent production line. During TMTS 2016, Delta provided a complete set of smart manufacturing solutions aligned to customer needs for smart manufacturing and smart green factories. New products and advanced solutions on display included:

• For smart manufacturing, Delta showcased its newly announced Articulated Robot DRV Series and a 600mm arm length SCARA Robot DRV60L series, as key components for high precision and highly flexible applications of the multi-angle insertion workstation and conveyor tracking for a glue dispensing workstation, providing high flexibility, precision, and speed for machinery processing and manufacturing.

• For smart green factories, Delta announced its Smart Factory Solution integrated smart machine solutions with automation products and smart industrial monitoring systems, including Equipment Data Acquisition Platform DIALink, Overall Equipment Effectiveness Platform DIAOEE, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) System DIAview, and IEMS (Industrial Energy Management System) DIAEnergie, to assist customers in establishing a complete factory network, and collecting data from different critical functions for visualization and management.

The Equipment Data Acquisition Platform DIALink acquires and transmits real-time operating equipment data via the SCADA System DIAview for analysis and visual display. The Overall Equipment Effectiveness Platform DIAOEE masters the overall equipment operation and output efficiency to ensure production efficiency. The IEMS DIAEnergie monitors, collects and analyzes real-time or periodic power consumption of facilities or regions in factories. With information on major power consumption, managers can then implement better energy strategies to enhance power efficiency and optimize energy management. Delta's Smart Factory Solution effectively enhances productivity and facility management efficiency for delivering smart and green factory models.

For the coming era of the Internet of Everything (IoE), smart manufacturing is no longer just a concept, it's a necessity. At this year's TMTS, Delta presents its Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Solution via demos and panels, which connect Delta's Industrial 3G Cloud Routers and DIACloud Internet Cloud Service Platform to collect facility operation data from PLCs and industrial controllers in factories, and upload it to the DIACloud for management.
