Delta Announces Substantial Investment in Robot R&D Headquarters at CTSP to Accelerate Smart Manufacturing

Delta just announced an expanded investment of over NT$1 billion in the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) at a joint press conference with Taiwan's Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and the CTSP bureau on May 4th. This investment will include the construction of Delta's first robot R&D headquarters for the development of AI and automation applications, and will directly create over 300 new job opportunities. Attending the joint press conference to announce this important news for the robot industry in Taiwan were the Minister of Science and Technology Mr. Liang-Gee Chen, the Director of CTSP Mr. Ming-huang Chen, Delta Chairman Mr. Yancey Hai, Delta Spokesperson Mr. Jesse Chou, Delta Industrial Automation Business Group General Manager Mr. Andy Liu, and Delta Robotic Automation Business Dept. Director Mr. Peter Peng.

Minister Liang-Gee Chen welcomed Delta's new robot R&D headquarters to the CTSP. He remarked that Delta is an international enterprise from Taiwan with a global vision dedicated to the development of automation equipment and manufacturing. As industry in central Taiwan has flourished in recent years, Delta's new robot R&D headquarters is expected to elevate the region's supply chain for robot manufacturing and applications. With solid automation technology and strong hardware/software development capabilities, Delta's new robot R&D headquarters will be an important step for AI development and future industrial trends in Taiwan. Minister Chen also made a commitment to cultivating more talent for AI and robotics.

Mr. Yancey Hai, Delta's Chairman, said that Delta has focused on smart manufacturing and renewable energy solutions in recent years, including wind power, solar energy, electric vehicles, energy storage systems and more. This development direction aligns with the government's Taiwan business plans, including Asia Silicon Valley, Smart Machines, and Green Technology. For smart manufacturing, Delta established a robot team in Taichung with only six members in 2012. This team will continue to grow to around 350 people and combine robot, motion controller and optical element teams by the year of 2020. Starting from 2012, Delta has followed the government's policies and has developed robotic technologies with universities and colleges through academia-industry cooperation.

In 2015 and 2016, Delta launched SCARA and articulated robots to the markets in Taiwan and China, and over 2,000 units have been sold to date. Delta's robots are for the most part self-developed and manufactured. Except for speed reducers, the servo drives & motors, controllers, human machine interfaces, machine vision systems and sensors in Delta's robot systems are all designed and made by Delta. The 85% self-development rate and highly integrated systems are the greatest advantages of Delta robots.

Delta continues to provide key technologies and solutions for smart machines and the automation industries to advance overall manufacturing. Starting out, Delta applied smart manufacturing solutions in its own production lines and factories and then gradually promoted these solutions to customers. Seeing the industry potential of Taichung, Delta plans to build a new plant in the CTSP for the development of technology, products and equipment that are related to smart manufacturing, including smart robots, PC-based open controllers, advanced optical equipment, and more. Through this investment, Delta hopes to build a robust connection with the local industry and lead industrial progress with its experience and innovative industrial automation technologies.
