Delta Power Quality Solution Enhances Safety for Aerial Tramway at a Famous China Tourist Spot

Recently, the aerial tramway system at a 5A-rated* tourist attraction in Hubei Province, China, adopted Delta Industrial Automation's Static Var Generator SVG2000 Series to solve their power quality issues. The SVG2000 Series greatly solved harmonic problems caused by the aerial tramway's original heavy power equipment that uses DC power. The improvement in energy efficiency and equipment safety was highly praised by the client.

The aerial tramway was built with a total length of more than 1,800m in high altitude mountains. It adopts a dual circuit loop with cable cars for eight people. Taking six minutes for a single ride, the tramway's maximum passenger traffic is 2,300 people per hour. The tramway's operation efficiency and safety were the most important concerns.

The original heavy DC power equipment of the tramway's control and drive system produced a large amount of harmonics during operation. The coexistence of dynamic reactive power and harmonic current caused low power factor of only 0.4, which was lower than the national standard of 0.9, and low power efficiency. This caused the tramway to suffer from large fines every month from the local power management department for power overload. What's worse, there were severe safety concerns for the drive system and wiring circuit.

Delta Industrial Automation evaluated the power quality, loading transformation, altitude and other conditions of the aerial tramway system, and suggested the installation of two parallel connected SVG2000 Series to provide a reliable and highly efficient power quality solution for the system. The SVG2000 Series prevents harmonic damage to the equipment that can be triggered by traditional leading phase capacitors.

Compared to a traditional static var compensator with an LC system, Delta's SVG2000 offers many excellent features, including enhanced stability, extended product lifetime, fast response, wide power range, large capacity, smooth tuning, low harmonics, stable system voltage, and many more, that greatly improve power quality. The SVG2000's compact design allows users to manage installation space efficiently; and the high standard color operation interface provides realistic images and a vivid display. The SVG2000's excellent features help to reduce energy loss, lower maintenance cost, and maximize the equipment's utility.

In this case, the SVG2000 Series helps the aerial tramway system to:
.Lower the running current from 170A to 60A
.Decrease harmonic voltage from 5.9% to 1.9% and harmonic current from 91.3% to 24.4%
.Improve power factor from 0.4 to 0.95
.Help the ratio of active and reactive power (cosØ) reach 0.99

The SVG Series solved the power quality issues and reduced damage to the power system. Its ability to enhance the system's loading safety helped the client earn praise from the power management department, making the client even more satisfied.

*Note: There are five Tourist Attraction Rating Categories in China: A (or 1A, the lowest level), AA (2As), AAA (3As), AAAA (4As) and AAAAA (5As, the highest level). A 5A rating is awarded based on 12 conditions, which include transportation, tours, safety, sanitation, telecommunication service, shopping, business management, resource and environment protection, tourist resource attraction, market attraction, annual volume of tourists, and tourist sampling satisfaction rate.
