Digitized Automation for a Changing World -
Delta Showcases Cloud-based Smart Factory at Taipei Automation Show 2020

Delta just participated in the Taipei Int'l Industrial Automation Exhibition 2020 (Automation Show 2020) from August 19th ~ 22nd. Focusing on the theme of “Digitized Automation for a Changing World”, Delta integrated cloud and IIoT technology, manufacturing platforms, smart equipment and advanced automation products to present a Factory Control and Monitoring Center, Smart Manufacturing Solutions, Industry-specific Solutions and Smart Machine Suite & Advanced Automation Products. Each of the topics covered Delta's latest solutions, equipment and products, including the highlighted edgeMES (MES and operation management for machine making), electronics assembly solutions based on Delta's real experience, and smart equipment including a robot grinding solution, loading / unloading robot workstation, and AI-based six-sided inspection machine.

Andy Liu, the General Manager of the Delta Industrial Automation Business Group (IABG), pointed out that many industries have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, yet some new businesses and opportunities have emerged. “Because of the coronavirus outbreak, the IABG expects a major sales increase coming from healthcare-related industries such as surgical masks, protective clothing, and respirators. We are also seeing an acceleration of automation and smart solution implementation in many industries due to the unpredictability of human and external factors,” said Andy.

To showcase cloud-integrated smart manufacturing for customers, Delta is using a large-scale TV wall to demonstrate its digital control and monitoring center for manufacturing. Smart solutions for electronics and other target industries are also featured for upgrading equipment, production processes and factories. Andy affirmed, “We are helping our customers enhance their competitiveness and prepare for post-pandemic growth with Delta's smart manufacturing.”

Highlights at the Delta Booth
During the 4-day tradeshow, Delta's exhibits covered its major topics with highlighted solutions, equipment and products, as follows:

Factory Control and Monitoring Center
Using a giant digital wall, Delta showcased how our DIAMES Manufacturing Execution System, DIAMMP Manufacturing Management Platform, DIAView SCADA System, and DIAEnergie Industrial Energy Management System are applied in the control and monitoring center of digital factories to achieve real-time management for equipment, production lines, productivity, and energy usage.

Smart Manufacturing Solutions
Highlighting cloud-integrated smart manufacturing, this topic covered smart equipment, solutions for production line integration, IIoT technology and cloud for manufacturing execution, scheduling and flexible changeover, as well as data exchange, analysis and optimization among equipment, management platforms and the cloud. These are all practical approaches to build smart, digital factories for all industries.

As a special feature during the event, Delta released its brand new edgeMES for Machine Making to the market. The edgeMES is a manufacturing execution system (MES) specially designed for equipment production. It combines with Microsoft's cloud platform (Azure SQL edge) and Trend Micro's security software to ensure advanced, digitalized and secure production execution and management. The cloud platform provides the SaaS subscription service for small / medium-sized machinery manufacturers to order MES services according to their requirements and budget control. For data exchange between the workshop equipment and cloud platform, the edgeMES adopts Trend Micro's advanced security functions to ensure data confidentiality for customers' machine making processes and operation tactics.

Another feature was the DIASPC Statistical Process Control System. In the architecture of cloud-integrated smart manufacturing, the DIASPC is integrated with the manufacturing execution system for in-line production quality control. It collects various quality data for analysis via statistical methods and control principles to monitor production processes and productivity. It also sends out early alarms for anomaly trends along with analytics for managers to identify issues that affect quality, react with troubleshooting and restore production stability. All data and analytics can be displayed in various reports and charts (standard or self-defined formats) for visualization of anomalies, alarms, and personalized / factory monitoring billboards. It helps managers to efficiently handle anomalies and quality issues in real-time.

Industry-specific Solutions
- Electronics Assembly
With decades of experience in electronics manufacturing, Delta can help customers implement IIoT, cloud and digital, smart solutions to semi-automated / fully-automated electronics assembly lines. Delta's one-stop service covers onsite consulting, design and planning, equipment implementation and networking, and assembly line construction according to customer requirements and budget.

With smart equipment, visualization and manufacturing management solutions, Delta realizes production planning / scheduling, data collection and analysis, quality management, preventive maintenance, material management and warehousing for customers. Delta's integrated solutions solve the issues of complex production, difficult material management and incomplete manual operation data collection for electronics assembly.

- Food / Medicine Processing
The Food & Medicine Loading / Unloading Robot Workstation for food and medicine processing was another popular demo. It adopts Delta's SCARA Robot DRS Series and the Machine Vision System DMV Series to accurately execute high-speed continuous loading and unloading for small food items and medicines (pills and tablets). It replaces labor, enhances efficiency, and ensures sanitary processing for the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Smart Equipment
- Electric Cylinder Servo Press
The newly launched cylinder servo press integrates Delta's key components (controller, servo drive and motor) to preform precise pressing and crimping for general hardware, car charging products, robot components and other complex electronic parts with high accuracy and repeatability. It supports multiple processes, realizes flexible changeover, and provides real-time data recording and analysis to ensure production quality. It is compact in size with a simple structure, and provides a variety of models for easy integration with different equipment.

- Robot Grinding Workstation
This workstation combines the Articulated Robot DRV Series and DRASimuCAD Robotic Simulation Platform. The DRASimuCAD simulates the processing path in advance for the DRV Series robot to perform accurate, smooth grinding for electronic components.

- AI-based Six-sided Inspection Machine
The machine features advanced AI technology to achieve highly precise inspection for subtle defects on electronic parts that can't be detected by AOI equipment. It supports connection of up to eight stations, and can be applied to the inspection of high-tech electronic parts such as passive components and integrated circuits (0.2 x 0.1 mm or above). The detection range and light source can be customized for various applications.

Advanced Automation Products: One of the most popular automation products at this year's automation show was the PC-Based Host Motion Controller AX-8 Series. The AX-8 Series achieves high-speed, highly accurate motion control for up to 64 axes (synchronous cycle: 1 ms.) via EtherCAT communication. It uses the CODESYS motion control platform to achieve easy programming for complicated motion control settings and seamless integration with other Delta products (AC Servo Drive ASDA-A3/B3 Series, Standard Compact Drive MS300 Series, Advanced Vector Control Drive C2000 Plus Series, and Remote I/O Module R1-EC Series) to construct complete motion solution for various applications.

Smart Manufacturing Seminars & Live Streaming
Delta held two seminars per day at its booth along with live streaming on YouTube during the tradeshow. The seminars focused on topics such as Transformation for Factory Digitalization, Cloud-integrated Smart Factory, Smart Equipment, Electronics Industry Solutions and more. On August 20th, the announcement of the new edgeMES for Machine Making with Microsoft and Trend Macro during the seminars attracted many visitors onsite and a large audience on YouTube.
