Delta's Founder Bruce Cheng Donates to Repair and Construct the First “Negative CO2 Emission” Building at TCFSH
Delta's founder and honorary chairman Mr. Bruce Cheng has made a donation to repair his alma mater, the historical building of the National Taichung First Senior High School (TCFSH). The TCFSH Historical Building was inaugurated at the Centennial Celebration Day of TCFSH on May 1st as a green building with enhanced ventilation and lighting systems. Using Delta's renewable energy power generation system, it is Taiwan's first building with “Negative CO2 Emissions”.
The TCFSH was founded in 1915 during the Japanese occupation. As Mr. Cheng's alma mater, TCFSH played an important role in his education and growing up. He met many great teachers who instructed and helped him build the optimism and strength of character that have supported him throughout his career.
The TCFSH Historical Building, constructed in 1937, is the last standing Japanese construction at TCFSH. The original name of the building was the TCFSH Auditorium, which was one of the first earthquake-resistant wide span roof buildings constructed after the Guan-Dao-Shan Earthquake in 1935. For now, it is used to display and store the historical information of TCFSH. In 2004, it was designated as a historical building by the Taichung City Government.
With decades of use, the TCFSH Historical Building fell into disrepair with a leaking roof and weathered walls. Invited by his alma mater in 2012, Mr. Cheng joined the planning and design for the TCFSH Historical Building repair project with J.J. Pan and Partner, Architects and Planners, the internationally renowned architecture agency. After three years' of planning, design, repair and reconstruction at a total cost of nearly USD 2.35 million, the TCFSH Historical Building was officially inaugurated at the Centennial Celebration Day of TCFSH on May 1st.
As a government certified historical building, the repair and reconstruction of walls, lime paint, window frames of the TCFSH Historical Building require constant examination and research by experts. The construction work also revealed the wide span roof structure of the building. In addition, Delta setup solar panels on the roof of the TCFSH Historical Building; these solar panels collect and generate over 16,000 kWh electricity annually, greatly exceeding the requirements of the building and making it the first “Negative CO2 Emission” building in Taiwan. Aside from building usage, the extra electricity generated will be sold back to the power company, and the income will be used for future building maintenance. It is a combination of technology and cultural history.
The first floor of the TCFSH Historical Building will be used as an auditorium and it is equipped with Delta's advanced energy-saving high laser lumen projector to enhance teaching quality. On the second floor, the TCFSH constructed a space for the school's history display. The TCFSH has also adopted Delta's extreme short throw projector and small projector to vividly display TCFSH's history.
Mr. Cheng also donated to move the greenhouse, originally located next to the TCFSH Historical Building, to the Science Building for students to continue their work in agriculture and research. The TCFSH now cooperates with the National Museum of Natural Science to cultivate the native orchids of Taiwan.
