Delta’s Manufacturing Management Solution Digitizes YAMAHA Motor Electronics Taiwan

As market trends change rapidly and customer needs diversify, modes of manufacturing have shifted from mass production, mixed-model production to automated and smart manufacturing. For the motorcycle electronics industry, challenges lie not only in the need for agility and flexibility, but, more importantly, for delivering consistent quality to ensure safety.

To reach this goal, traditional modes of operation must be renovated. For example, paperwork, a common way to record information, is difficult to keep information in one place, let alone provide real-time data for analysis. When rush orders arrive, it is impossible to respond in time with a comprehensive grasp of the current production status when overwhelmed by piles of paper.

Electronics manufacturers endeavor to keep track of every element of complex production lines, including materials, processes, key parameters, on-site conditions and more. Only when these elements are constantly monitored can the scheduling of production processes be optimized for on-time delivery with consistent quality using flexible manufacturing. However, simply implementing advanced equipment is not enough. Digitizing production lines requires in-depth industry knowledge, and, more importantly, the understanding of the business model to maximize the utilization of current resources.

With this philosophy, Delta has successfully upgraded a product line for YAMAHA Motor Electronics Taiwan, a leading brand in motorcycle electronics manufacturing. Expanded from the renowned Japanese brand Yamaha Motor, the company blends diligence and meticulousness, the typical traits in Japanese culture, with the latest automation and smart manufacturing technologies. It plays an important role in providing high quality motorcycle electronics to the related companies of YAMAHA around the world.

As the priority in managing the production processes of motorcycle electronics is integrating complex elements, Delta first mobilized the Manufacturing Management System DIAWorks. The system centers around Delta’s Manufacturing Execution System DIAMES to manage production information. Connecting equipment management and IIoT, the system also enables production traceability and quality monitoring. This structure allows the management of all the critical production information in one place, including equipment failure alerts and material shortages, and operators are notified to troubleshoot in time.

Equipment information is collected through Delta’s Equipment IoT Platform DIALink, which replaces paperwork and uploads data in real time. The data is then processed by Delta’s Smart Visualization Platform DIASVP to be presented with intuitive charts and graphs.

Delta’s Manufacturing Management System DIAWorks brings the following benefits to YAHAMA Motor Electronics Taiwan:

•  Data automation to enhance information immediacy and production predictability

Delta’s Equipment IoT Platform DIALink collects equipment information in real time, allowing managers to stay on top of equipment status for predictive maintenance to reduce equipment failures. Delta’s Smart Visualization Platform DIASVP transforms the data into intuitive charts and graphs, ensuring the realization of production plans. Additionally, the electric panels that present operation instructions also reduce paper consumption.

•  High level of integration to optimize resource allocation

The Manufacturing Management System DIAWorks leverages Delta’s Manufacturing Execution System DIAMES to integrate the information of incoming materials, inspection, and work order scheduling. The system also connects with the equipment maintenance system and IIoT, which optimizes resource utilization to lower stocks and costs. When the heterogeneous ERP and the personnel skill system are integrated, work orders can be dispatched automatically and work station correctly allocated to corresponding operators.

•  User-friendly operation reduces human errors

Handheld devices and pads enable fast operation and status reporting. The intuitive displays of the devices can significantly reduce operation errors, including the writing errors of operators.

Smart manufacturing has become a familiar slogan for manufacturers while in practice step-by-step reforms are needed to overcome a series of challenges. In this collaboration with YAMAHA Motor Electronics Taiwan, Delta helped its partner by digitizing paperwork, enabling data automation, integrating production data and eventually advancing to smart manufacturing.
