Delta's Robot Controller with Servo Drive Integrated Enhances Stable and High-Precision Mobile Phone Glass Machining Solution

Delta recently provided mobile phone glass panel processing solutions to a mobile device manufacturer in China to fulfill requirements for a mobile phone production line. Delta's automation products integrate with the customer's existing production lines.

With today's explosion of information, people strongly rely on electronic communication devices, such as computers, mobile phones, and tablets for work and to engage in their daily communications and interactions. As the demand for electronics devices increases, customers are shopping for more refined and personalized products. Mobile devices such as personal computers and cell phones not only require comprehensive functionality, but also need a certain uniqueness and diversity to win over customers. In the modern world where new technologies are launched daily, the electronics industries seek greater precision and diversity in production to satisfy the high-end and a highly demanding market.

When constructing mobile phone production lines, industry clients favor highly precise and stable processing efficiency for manufacturing intricate gadgets and work pieces, in contrast to heavy duty capacities needed for heavy industries. In addition, high-precision equipment ensures advanced work pieces, such as mobile phone PCB boards, glass panels, lenses, mobile phone outer parts and more, to remain intact after processing, for enhanced product quality and stability.

Delta's solution optimizes the glass brushing process for mobile phone back panels, and utilizes industrial robots to perform pick-and-place of the work piece, assisting the production line in precise manufacturing and assembly of mobile phone outer cases.

The brushing process for mobile phone glass back panels includes the following steps: material feeding, picking, brushing process, working position switching, automated material changing, and more. Glass is an important manufacturing material for the electronic industries. In the past, materials were pick and fed to the conveyor using manpower, which required plenty of labor and time and was inefficient. Problems occurred such as misplaced materials, or insufficient material counts in the feeding tray, which tended to produce defects resulting in a bad yield rate and increased management costs.

To fulfill customer demand for glass material processing and pick-and-place operations, Delta integrates industrial robots and the whole production line using the Robot Controller with Servo Drive Integrated ASDA-MS Series to simultaneously control up to four sets of the AC Servo Motors ECME Series. This integration achieves a precise glass brushing process for mobile phone back panels and agile material switching during production for stable and highly efficient processing and pick-and-place operation. It also provides an industry upgrade, as well as saving cost of time and labor for corporations.

For the glass panel's automated brushing process, the Compact Modular Mid-range PLC AS Series sends signals to control conveyors that deliver material trays to designated working positions, where industrial robots pick up glass materials to place on the brushing machine for processing. For controlling industrial robots, this solution adopts the Robot Controller with Servo Drive Integrated ASDA-MS Series. It not only provides controls for industrial robots, but also drives four sets of the AC Servo Motors ECME Series for precise 4-axis robot generation. After machining, industrial robots place the finished work piece back on the material trays to complete the process. In addition, operators can monitor and adjust the manufacturing processes in real-time through the Widescreen HMI DOP-B Series, achieving highly flexible automated processes.

In actual application, Delta's mobile phone glass processing and pick-and-place solution brings the following advantages to our clients:

• Highly efficient and stable industrial robot integration: The system features a built-in path doubling interpolation algorithm to help the industrial robots maintain smooth operation when picking and dropping items at high speed. Upon integrating the robot with the existing production line, the performance for screen printing of the front cover can reach 1,800 pieces/hour and performance for the rear cover can reach 1,380 pieces/hour, offering efficient and stable operation and performance.

• Integrated performance from flexible expansion: According to actual requirements for the production line, the robots can be equipped with various peripheral devices to facilitate expansion of performance. For example, industrial robots can integrate with machine vision systems to correct pickup position for the materials and achieve accurate positioning.

• One stop solution for saving cost: Delta's mobile phone glass processing and pick-and-place solution utilizes the Compact Modular Mid-range PLC, human machine interfaces, Robot Controller with Servo Drive Integrated, and AC servo motors to integrate into a customer's existing production line, providing an industrial upgrade without requiring equipment replacement. In addition, the production line is equipped with a bundle of Delta's automation products for high compatibility, as well as easy maintenance and integration. Customers only need to shop at one stop to build a perfect automated production line.

Delta's mobile phone glass processing and pick-and-place solution enhances precision and speed of the brushing process, and reduces the costs for labor and time, while enhancing overall competitiveness.
