Power of Smart Manufacturing - Delta Showcases Integrated Robot Production Line and High-end IA Solutions at Techno-Frontier 2018 in Japan

Delta presented a wide range of high-end automation products and solutions at the Techno-Frontier show from April 18th to 20th at Makuhari Messe in Tokyo, Japan. During the exhibition, Delta provided highly automated, flexible, and energy-saving applications with highlights that include the Integrated Robotic Smart Manufacturing Production Line Application, showcased for the first time in Japan, and the High-efficiency Motor Drives Combined with IPM Motor Solution to meet the smart manufacturing needs of our customers.

The Techno-Frontier show is credited by manufacturers in Japan as one of the most professional exhibitions for electronics, mechanical equipment, and related technologies. This year, the event focuses on a variety of technical themes such as power supplies, motion drives and motors, motion control systems, EMC (Electromagnetic Calorimeter), machine parts, battery technology, thermal engineering, energy harvesting, AI & IOT, and more. During the 3-day exhibition, the show attracted almost 30,000 visitors, experts, and professionals from around the world.

For the Japanese local manufacturing industry, Delta presented a series of smart manufacturing automation products and solutions with displays that include:

• Integrated Robotic Smart Manufacturing Production Line Application: To meet the trend of smart manufacturing in Japan, Delta introduced the Integrated Robotic Smart Manufacturing Production Line Application that employs one Delta SCARA Robot DRS40L Series and one Delta Robot in a demonstration of repeated object tracking and feeding operations on one conveyor and one feeding belt on an individual workstation.

The production line begins with the SCARA Robot DRS40L Series precisely picking up two roundels at once from the feeding belt and placing them onto two conveyors. When the roundels are sent to the Delta Robot workstation's conveyors, the Robot picks up the roundels (two at once), puts them onto the feeding belt, and sends them back again to the SCARA Robot workstation to repeat the whole operation.

For the control side of the application, Delta uses the Robot Controller with the Servo Drive Integrated ASDA-MS Series that has built-in 4-axis servo drives and is capable of expanding to 6 axis via Delta's high-speed communication network, the DMCNET. It also integrates motion controller and servo drives into one single unit, which enables it to speed up data transmission and enhance the performance of the control system. With these features, the ASDA-MS Series succeeds in performing high-precision and high-speed motion control on the 27 servo drives and motors of the whole production line that includes products such as the SCARA Robot, the Delta Robot, and the AC Servo System ASDA-A2 Series. In addition, the ASDA-MS Series provides a comprehensive development platform that supports multiple robot motion settings and 5 kinds of PLC programming languages, assisting customers to design functions based on their needs and create a smart, flexible, and multi-tasking automatic production line.

For synchronous feeding with sensors that detect the roundels' position, Delta designed a dual-conveyor system that performs synchronous resending of two roundels. If the same set of roundels is not aligned with one another, the AC Servo System ASDA-A2 Series can speed up the slower roundel or slow down the faster roundel by adjusting the speed of the conveyors with its electronic cam in real-time. This is to ensure the roundels are in the exact same position while they are being sent to the Delta Robot workstation and precisely picked up from the conveyors, and then repeats the operations smoothly. Attracting plenty of visitors during the exhibition, the application does not require any upper controller for automatic positioning and tracing, effectively reducing the cost of electromechanical products and laborers for our customers. • High-efficiency Motor Drives Combined with IPM Motor Solution: To meet the need for motor applications with low power consumption for energy savings, Delta cooperated with a Japanese motor manufacturer and provided a green automation solution. It employs Delta's High Performance Compact Drive MH300 Series and the Heavy Duty Vector Control Drive CH2000 Series to stably control interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors, offering outstanding drive performance and high-speed output frequency (2000Hz under open loop) and meeting impact loading applications such as cranes, machine tools, and more. Additionally, the newly designed Vector Control Drive C2000-HS Series supports a wide range of power for different industry needs and offers a safer, more flexible, and high-end drive control solution.

Japan continues to be one of the world's most important manufacturing countries. Its market trends and quality are industry benchmarks in Asia. Facing the rapid changes and needs of Japanese manufacturing industries, Delta uses its advanced automation technologies and years of experience in manufacturing to provide smart and highly automated integrated solutions and manufacturing modes during the show, while offering “smart manufacturing” competitiveness for our customers and achieving “Automation for a Changing World”.
